Porticco, France, August 22, 2004 - The Tychnovas of the Czech Republic rebounded from an opening defeat to win the US$10,000 Corsica Satellite here Sunday by defeating fourth-seeded Carole Cordinnier and Mathilde Geordano of France in the finals.
Seeded seventh in the 13-team FIVB Satellite Beach Volleyball event, the Tychnovas scored a 21-16 and 21-16 win over the fourth-seeded Cordinnier and Giordano to net the $2,000 first-place prize. The French pair, who also had to win an elimination bracket match to advance to the "final four," shared $1,500.
The Tychnovas advanced to the finals with elimination bracket wins over teams from Austria, Israel and France before scoring a 16-21, 21-18 and 15-12 win over top-seeded Sara Montagnolli and Sabine Swoboda of Austria in the semi-finals. Cordinnier and Giodano eliminated second-seeded Sanne Keizer and Merel Mooren of the Netherlands 15-21, 21-15 and 15-13 before scoring a 21-17, 19-21 and 15-13 win over 10th-seeded Svitlana Baburina and Galyna Osheyko of the Ukraine in the semi-finals.
In the bronze medal match, Baburina and Osheyko upset Montagnolli and Swoboda 21-19 and 21-14 to gain a share of the $1,200 third-place prize. |
