Bidding Process

 Event Bidding Book

The event bidding process was put in place to ensure the transparency of the selection of each city that would host a volleyball or beach volleyball event.

An overview of the general event bidding process can be found here.

Why has the FIVB introduced a bidding process?

The image and reputation of the sport of volleyball is best characterised by the quality and organisational efficiency of the FIVB’s tournaments. An important aspect of the FIVB 9 Goals is to “implement a competitive, effective and sustainable bidding process” in order to provide interested host nations with an opportunity to develop the sport.

A bidding process is a key first step in determining if an organiser has the capacity and resources to stage an event, thereby helping to eliminate any unnecessary costs. Moreover, the procedure ensures a level of fairness by guaranteeing all interested parties have access to the same level of information – including the rules, regulations and expected standards of the international federation – at the time of bidding.

The procedures are in place to assist any potential organiser to prepare its bid and understand its obligations towards the FIVB, clearly. In this way the FIVB seeks to provide consistency in the way its tournaments are organised and presented, leading to a greater level of success for the organisers.

What can organisers expect from hosting a tournament?

A tournament is a chance for host nations to become part of the FIVB’s rich and varied sporting history. Countries and cities have a golden opportunity to draw the spotlight on their communities.

Competitions have taken place in all manner of venues – from a unique floating stadium built on the Hofvijver pond in The Hague during the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships The Netherlands 2015 to a football stadium in Warsaw for the opening match of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship Poland 2014.

With a wide range of properties, almost any city can have the opportunity to welcome volleyball and beach volleyball at any level.

The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships The Netherlands 2015 produced a unique concept, with four cities hosting the tournament for the first time. This was an overwhelming success as a record attendance of almost 110,000 fans from around the world experienced sold-out matches.

The Volleyball World Championships in 2015 were preceded by the FIVB Volleyball World Championships in 2014, with Italy welcoming the women’s edition and Poland the men’s. It was a true volleyball extravaganza, highlighted by an incredible 62,000 fans packing into the National Stadium in Warsaw for the opening men’s match between Poland and Serbia.
