Portugal beat Spain 3-2 (19-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-20, 15-13) - duration 2:02
04-Oct, start time: 17:20, end time: 19:22 - Attendance: 1,500
Rafael Pascual (Captain ESP): "We started the match performing well but got into a downward mental spiral. Great credit to the Portuguese team which took off and improved as the game went by".
Ibirajara Pereyra (Head Coach POR): "I think we performed badly throughout the first two sets. We were not into the game. Luckily we managed to turnaround the result and I am very happy for the team."
Francisco Hervas (Head Coach ESP): "It was a very though match for us. We have not been performing well throughout the championship and I am worried about that. Although we started winning the first two sets, once the rival put some pressure on us with the service we started to doubt once again".
Q: Why did you take out Rafael Pascual at the beginning of the third set? A: "The idea of replacing "Rafa" was based on trying to control their serving. They were pressing a lot with the serve and I decided to reinforce our reception".
Q: Thinking about tomorrow's match, will you have to work hard on the psychological aspect, taking into account that today you lost a match that seemed like a won match? A: "This is a difficult moment. We are not fulfilling our expectations. We must pull ourselves together to win tomorrow's match".
Juan Diaz (Head Coach POR): "We lacked determination at the start of the game. We spent the first two sets trying to cheer up the players. I told them that I did not care about winning or losing but playing well for the spectators and all the people watching at us back in Portugal. It is valuable victory because this is a very young team".
