Poland wins and waits for Italy
Poland started without complications the first round of the Volleyball World Championship Argentina 2002 by beating the Canadian team 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 26-24 and 25-21) in front of a numerous crowd in the Angel P. Malvicino Stadium in Santa Fe. In the first set the teams traded the lead. The game was even until they reached point 20. Cananda was a synonym of Duerden (9 points) and of a regular performance. However, the European team had no trouble to beat its oponent. Poland distributed the play among all the spikers and sealed the set in 23 minutes. In the second set, the development was similar to the previous one. This time, the head coach DeRocco sent the experienced setter Koskie to court and he made a better distribution. The red team lowered the efficiency in attack and was unable to break through a compact block and a strong defense. This tactic of the Canadian team proved positive and the scoreboard favoured them. Canada, inspired like in the previous set, kept a cool head, showing a 63% efficiency in counterattacks. Poland profited from the deadly attacks of Murek, the power of Gruszka and managed to revert a score that was unfavorable most of the time, thus taking the set in the end. In the fourth set, Poland once again showed the weapons that took them to the finals of the World League. With the help of Murek (16 points) and Papke (15 points), the Polish made everything simple with regularity and power and sealed the match. Wspanially said: "It was a tough match, the differences were slight, but we hope to repeat tomorrow".
