Spain left Kazakhstan behind and finished second
Spain defeated Kazakhstan 3-1 in the last Pool D match of the 2002 Men's World Championship. It was the second victory for the Spanish team after winning against Japan on Monday to give them second place in their group and allowed them to coast through to the second round. Perhaps showing overconfidence, the Spaniards let the Kazakhs take the first set. They utilized their hitter Zhukov, who scored 5 points, plus effective blocking to put a stop to Spanish hitters Pascual (7), and Salvador (4 points). From that moment on, Spain was swift in its response. Hervas brought on Saucedo and Suela for Spain at the beginning of the next set, who scored 8 points each, together with setter Flores and put away the next set 25-21 with Kazakhstan powerless against the strong Spanish service and bending under pressure from Saucedo, Pascual and Suela. They continued their pressure during the third, but Kazakhstan made a brief flurry and were two points up at 8-6 in the final set. Their success was shortlived and Spain grew in confidence and now look forward to the second round. /mh
