The Road to Germany
The Road to Germany for the final twenty-four
teams that
make up the 2002 Women's World Championship, started
with the first Continental Qualification event in January
this year in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Qualification
then spread across the five continents with over 60 teams competing in nineteen separate qualification tournaments.
Only two teams
had automatic qualification: Cuba, as 1998 World Champion
(also World Champions in 1994 and 1978), and Germany, as
host.
The other
twenty-two teams include the previous World Champions: Russia
(1952, 1956, 1960, 1970, 1990 [as USSR]); Japan (1962, 1967,
1974); and China (1982 and 1986), as well as previous
podium finishers Brazil (2nd 1994); USA (2nd 1967,
3rd 1990, 1982); Korea (3rd 1967, 1970, 1974); and Czech
Republic (3rd 1952, 1960 [as Czechoslovakia]).
The
remaining teams
have a mix of World Championship experience. Eleven of them have competed in three or more World Championships:
Netherlands and Bulgaria (9), Poland (7), Romania and Italy
(6), Canada (5), Mexico (4), Argentina and Dominican
Republic (3).
Kenya and Puerto
Rico have competed in two previous World Championships, with
Australia, Egypt, Thailand only one each, leaving one World
Championship debutant for 2002: Greece.
