Brazil
Having won the Gold medal at the 2001 World
Championship and the South American
Championship last year the Brazilian Youth
team are going all out to defend their
title, having started preseason training
in March.
Head
coach Percy Oncken has been putting his
players through their paces in Belo
Horizonte with the hope of seeing the
Brazilian U19 Boy's team claim their sixth
World Championship title.
"I called up 22 players of which
12 of them had participated in the South
American Championship in Chile last year,"
Oncken said. "The other 10 players
were seen during regional tournaments,
Brazilian Championships or were signalled
out by the local federations. From this
initial list I have whittled down the
squad to 12 for Thailand, which resembles
a strong lineup.
"Our players present height and
ability at the same time and I am sure we
will have a very competitive team with
great potential."
The Boy's U19 World Championship is the
first step for Brazilian Volleyball's main
goal, which is to hold the World
Championship in all three categories again.
"The responsibility increases
every time a country wins the World
Championship in all age groups as Brazil
has done for the two years," Oncken
said. "We know that our mission is to
keep Brazilian Volleyball on the top and
we will do our best to do it".
