Argentina earn first berth at Women's Olympic tournament

 

Argentina celebrate qualifying for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games

San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina, January 11, 2016 – Argentina seized the Rio 2016 Olympic Games berth after they defeated Peru in their last match of the South American Olympic Qualification Tournament 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-14). Argentina's women's team will participate in the volleyball tournament at the Olympic Games for the first time.
 
Argentina ended the tournament undefeated and having lost just one set. After victories against Chile 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-14), Venezuela 3-1 (25-18, 25-16, 25-17, 25-18) and Colombia 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-17), they also defeated Peru, who finish second and will get another chance to qualify for Rio at the World Olympic Qualification Tournament to be held between the periods of May 14 to June 5.

Argentine Volleyball Federation President Juan Antonio Gutierrez said  “I am very proud because our women’s volleyball team deserved this prize after working so hard dedicating themselves only to training and learning more.  I am very excited because we obtain the chance to be at the Olympic Games and that makes me very proud.  We always knew that by working hard we could make our dream come true. All Argentinians must be proud of Las Panteras”.

By defeating Chile in their final match of the tournament, Colombia finish third and earn another chance to qualify for the Summer Games at the second World Olympic Qualification Tournament also to be held in May or June.
