Canada, Czech Republic and Russia claim Olympic tickets in Sochi
The winners of the last four tickets for the Rio Olympic Games
Host country Russia defeated Belgium 2-0 in the men’s semifinal. Oleg Stoyanovskiy and Artem Yarzutkin beat Bob Douwen and Aljosa Urnaut 21-17, 21-18 and Dmitri Barsouk and Nikita Liamin booked a 21-16, 19-21, 15-12 win over Dries Koekelkoren and Tom van Walle.
The federation will decide later on which team will travel to the Olympics. This team will join Brouwer/Meeuwsen (NED), Kantor/Losiak (POL) and Böckermann/Flüggen (GER) in pool B.
The Canadian men beat Venezuela 2-1. Josh Binstock and Sam Schachter lost 2-1 (13-21, 21-19, 15-13) to Rolando ‘Peter’ Hernandez and Jose ‘Tigrito’ Gomez. Sam Pedlow and Grant O’Gorman then defeated Jesus Villafane and Jackson Henriquez 2-0 (21-15, 21-12) in the second match and Hernandez and Henriquez 15-11 in the golden set.
The two teams will decide in a play-off on July 16 who gets the Olympic ticket. The winning team completes pool A with Alison/Bruno (BRA), Carambula/Ranghieri (ITA) and Doppler/Horst (AUT).
The Czech women also needed a golden set to win against China. Kristyna Kolocova and Michala Kvapilova lost 2-1 (21-19, 20-22, 15-11) to Chen Xue and Xinyi Xia. Marketa Slukova and Barbora Hermannova won both the second match versus ChunXia Chen and Ningya Tang (21-12, 21-13) and the golden set against Chen Xue and Xinyi Xia (15-12).
Slukova and Hermannova will represent the Czech Republic in Rio, the federation had already decided upfront. The Czech girls will complete pool B at the Olympics, with Agatha/Barbara (BRA), Elsa Baquerizo/Liliana Fernandez (ESP) and Ana Gallay/Georgina Klug (ARG).
The Russian women defeated Austria 2-1. Ekaterina Birlova and Nadia Makroguzova won 2-0 (21-17, 21-10) against Katharina Schützenhöfer and Lena Plesiutschnig, but Evgenia Ukolova and Anastasia Barsuk lost 2-1 (15-21, 21-17, 15-12) to Stefanie Schwaiger and Barbara Hansel. In the golden set Birlova and Ukolova teamed up to defeat Schwaiger and Hansel 15-3.
The federation needs to decide who will join Talita/Larissa (BRA), Brzostek/Kolosinska (POL) and Fendrick/Sweat (USA) in pool A.
