The bottom eight ranked teams were randomly drawn into three pools, joining the top four ranked teams who were placed into the three pools in a snaking pattern according to their current FIVB World Rankings.
The allocated pools will determine the match schedule for the preliminary round-robin stage of the competition, with each team to play every other team within their pool once.
In the women's tournament, Australia will play Scotland, Grenada and Cyprus in Pool A. Top-ranked Canada will face England, Trinidad and Tobago and Fiji in Pool B, while New Zealand and Vanuatu will meet Singapore and Rwanda in Pool C.
The Australian men are pitted against Trinidad and Tobago, St. Kitts and Nevis, and Fiji in Pool A, while the strong Canadian contingent will contend with Scotland, Sri Lanka and Sierra Leone. In Pool C, England will play New Zealand, Cyprus and Mozambique.
The preliminary rounds will run from April 6-9 before culminating with the quarterfinals, semifinals and Gold and Bronze Medal Matches from April 10 to 12, with all matches to be held at the 4000-seat capacity Coolangatta Beachfront venue. Today’s unveiling of the pools will enable the full match schedule to be completed in mid-February.
Australia's Chris McHugh and Damien Schumann, Vanuatu's Miller Pata and Linline Matauatu joined Gold Coast 2018 officials Greg Nance, Volleyball Australia CEO Andrew Dee, assistant minister for Tourism Industry Development Meaghan Scanlon and five-time Olympian and two-time medallist Natalie Cook at the drawing of lots ceremony, which was supervised by FIVB Technical Delegate Blair Harrison.
Volleyball Australia CEO Andrew Dee said: “It’s a very special day for beach volleyball, not only here in Australia but on the international stage as well, with today’s pool draw bringing the reality closer that our wonderful sport will make its Commonwealth Games debut right here on the Gold Coast”
