Ngapeth sparks tie-break win for Modena in Italian Super League

Earvin Ngapeth led DHL Modena to win 3-2 over Sir Safety Perugia Conad on Game 2 of the Italian Super League

Perugia, Italy, May 5, 2016 – French superstar Earvin Ngapeth sparked DHL Modena’s victory 3-2 (21-25, 25-17, 24-26, 25-23, 15-10), as they seized their second-straight triumph over Sir Safety Perugia Conad in the Italian Super League at PalaEvangelisti on Thursday.

Ngapeth was voted match MVP with 20 points, as he delivered crucial points from the service line that broke their opponents’ momentum in the final set. Luca Vettori top scored for Modena with 22 points. Serbian opposite Aleksandr Atanasijevic and the USA outside spiker Aaron Russell led Perugia with 20 and 17 points, respectively.

Hosts Perugia showed a more convincing performance in their second final match, challenging Modena to a two-hour long clash. Perugia drew first blood as they took the first set 25-21, while it took a bit more time for Modena to heat up in the second set. Nonetheless, Modena levelled it at 25-17.

Perugia once again emerged on top of the third set 26-24. Russell tied the score at 23-all in the fourth set for Perugia but could not capitalise on their momentum and dropped the set after a faulty reception by German outside spiker Denys Kaliberda. Ngapeth led Modena’s great comeback in the fifth frame 15-10.

Modena will take a stab at finishing the series on Sunday, May 8, when the team plays at their home court Pala Panini.

International stars from Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Serbia and USA banner these both sides. After this club season, these players will put on their national team jerseys as they compete for the FIVB Volleyball World League and the World Olympic Qualification Tournament.
