The New Zealand Herald article highlighted the clash of clothing styles in beach volleyball

Lausanne, Switzerland, December 14, 2016 – The New Zealand Herald is revisiting its top sports stories of 2016 and volleyball has made it into the newspaper’s Top 10.

The August 9 article titled “Volleyball’s cover-ups vs cover-nots” focused on the different outfits worn by men and women, and particularly women and women in beach volleyball.

“It is a fast and furious sport played under the sun and famed for its revealing attire – with a practical uniform of bikinis for women and board shorts for men,” the article stated.

The report highlighted how some female players wear nothing more than a bikini while others prefer to be more discreet, with Egypt’s Doaa Elghobashy covering her body and wearing a hijab on her head.

The Egyptian is quoted as saying: “I have worn the hijab for 10 years. It doesn't keep me away from the things I love to do, and beach volleyball is one of them.”
