Iconic beach volleyball pic makes Reuters 'Top 100'

Lausanne, Switzerland, December 22, 2016 - The iconic photo from the Rio 2016 Olympic Games beach volleyball tournament contrasting the playing uniforms of Germany's Kira Walkenhorst and Egypt’s Doaa Elghobashy has won another distinction, after being selected amongst the top 100 'Pictures of the Year' by Reuters news agency.

Earlier this week the picture had been selected as one of the best of the year by Spanish news agency as.com in their 'Year in Pictures' feature.

The picture shows Walkenhorst in standard beach volleyball wear of a bikini attempting to block Elghobashy who plays fully clothed with her head covered by a hijab.

It was shot on 7 August 2016 at Copacabana Beach by Lucy Nicholson for Reuters, as Walkenhorst and teammate Laura Ludwig scored their first win on their way to claiming the Olympic gold medal, 2-0 (21-12, 21-15) over Elghobashy and Nada Meawad - though the picture went down in history not so much for the game itself, as for the universal appeal of beach volleyball and that one doesn't need to be defined by what one wears.

It is one of very few sports-related photos to make it to Reuters' 2016 'Top 100'.
