Snow volleyball officially recognised by Russian Ministry of Sports

Moscow, Russia, December 14, 2016 - Snow volleyball was given official recognition in Russia by a Special Commission of the Russian Ministry of Sports on Wednesday. The representatives of the Ministry wished the Russian Volleyball Federation success in their efforts to develop and popularise snow volleyball, and expressed the hope that national and international snow volleyball competitions would soon take place in Russia.

The application was submitted by the General Director of the Russian Beach Sports Association, Ilya Volodarskiy.

“December 14 will remain as a milestone. With today we started a completely new stage in the development of snow volleyball in Russia,” said Volodarskiy. “Last year this sport was officially recognised by the CEV and the first edition of a European Tour was held as well. It’s nice that the Russian Ministry of Sports has decided to support our initiative and now recognised snow volleyball. We have huge plans to organise a number of national and international snow volleyball activities in Russia. I am sure that there is a bright future ahead for this sport.”

A first snow volleyball event on Russian soil was held this past May at the Rosa Khutor Alpine Resort in Sochi with an exhibition match played at an altitude of 2,320 m. A first European Tour took place earlier this year with stops in the Czech Republic, Austria and Italy – with Russian Volleyball Federation President and CEV Vice President Stanislav Shevchenko strongly supporting the initiative.
