Tilley/Bain, Hartles/O’Dea dominate first stop of New Zealand beach tour

Tauranga, New Zealand, January 10, 2017 – New Zealand’s Julia Tilley/Alice Bain and Tom Hartles/Sam O’Dea topped the Bay of Plenty Times Mt Maunganui Open on Sunday, the first stop on the 2017 New Zealand national beach volleyball tour. 

Athletes from Germany, Japan and the Netherlands joined New Zealand’s top teams, headed by top seeded women’s pair Julia Tilley and Alice Bain and men’s duo Rene Kapa and Morgan Seymour.


Tilley/Bain, who performed well at the end of the 2016 domestic series and the Asian Tour, defeated Kelsie Wills/Francesca Kirwan 2-1 (22-20, 17-21, 15-8) in the women’s final. In the men's competition, however, Kapa/Seymour lost the final to Hartles/O’Dea in a straight-set match 2-0 (23-21, 21-14). 

Meanwhile, Micah Lindsay-Brown/Dani Quigley routed the Netherlands’ Shannen Bagge/Rimke Braakman 2-0 (21-8, 21-13) in the women’s bronze medal match, while Michael Watson/Manaia Harris defeated Thomas Reid/Daryl Lewis 2-1 (21-11, 14-21, 15-13) in the men’s bronze medal match.
