The 2026 CSV Men’s South American Continental Volleyball Championship concluded in Rio de Janeiro with Brazil reclaiming continental supremacy following a 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-20) victory over arch-rivals Argentina at the historic Maracanãzinho arena on Sunday morning.
The championship featured a single round-robin format among six competing nations, with Brazil sweeping through their opening four fixtures before meeting Argentina in a winner-take-all final match. The triumph marked Brazil’s 34th continental title, continuing an unmatched legacy in South American men’s volleyball. Brazil have won 34 of the 36 editions of the championship and returned to the top of the podium after Argentina claimed the title in Recife in 2023. Brazil did not participate in the 1964 edition.
Securing the continental title guaranteed Brazil a direct quota berth at the LA28 Olympic Games, ensuring their place at the upcoming Summer Games.
Brazil dominated in attack with a 47-38 edge while commanding the net with a 7-2 advantage in blocks. Darlan led all scorers with a match-high 23 points, all from attacks. His performance peaked in the third set, where he produced 12 spikes. On the Argentine side, Luciano Vicentín scored a team-high 11 points, seven of which came in the final set as he attempted to answer Darlan’s scoring spree.
Brazil’s continental title provides important momentum for head coach Bernardo Rezende’s squad as they build towards the next phase of the international cycle. After missing the VNL 2026 Finals, Brazil responded with an impressive South American Championship campaign, winning all five matches without dropping a set.
The victory at the Maracanãzinho also reinforces Brazil’s broader stature in world volleyball. The men’s national team have competed at every Olympic Games since volleyball joined the programme at Tokyo 1964. Brazil’s Olympic record includes three gold medals, won at Barcelona 1992, Athens 2004 and Rio 2016.
The competitive balance and outcomes of the 2026 championship also highlight the long-term impact of targeted sports development supported by the FIVB Volleyball Empowerment Projects Platform across the region. Chilean volleyball has benefited from an ongoing $231,000 project to appoint head coach Marcelo Nicolas Ippolito to lead the boys’ U19 programme through 2027, building on $298,500 in equipment support provided between 2019 and 2025.
The South American Championship also served as the primary regional qualification route for the 2027 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup, scheduled to take place in Poland. By finishing as the top three teams in the Rio standings, champions Brazil, runners-up Argentina and bronze medallists Chile all secured direct qualification for the World Cup. Chile confirmed their podium finish and their place in Poland with a convincing 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-17) victory over Bolivia in their final fixture on Sunday afternoon.
Argentina have also benefited from Volleyball Empowerment support, including an $18,000 knowledge transfer project awarded in 2022, while Brazil have received equipment support as part of efforts to maintain high standards across their national programme.
Brazil’s Lucarelli was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP), while Fernando ‘Cachopa’ Kreling was named Best Setter, Darlan Best Opposite and Adriano Xavier one of the two Best Outside Hitters alongside Chile’s Noé Aravena. Brazil’s Flávio and Argentina’s Agustín Loser were named Best Middle Blockers, while Argentina’s Franco Massimino received the Best Libero award.
