Cuba’s men’s national volleyball team officially punched their ticket to the LA28 Olympics following a 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 23-25, 25-22) victory over host nation Canada in the Olympic Qualification Phase of the 2026 NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship.
The triumphant victory on Saturday evening cues in Cuba’s 8th Olympic appearance, completing a triumphant return to the world’s biggest sporting stage after last competing at the Rio 2016 Games. A historic powerhouse in the sport, Cuba previously earned an Olympic bronze medal at the Montreal 1976 Games, and this latest milestone signals a major revival for the storied national programme.
During the play-off at the Avenir Centre in Moncton, Cuba posted a 62-57 edge in attacks and also led from the service line with 9 aces compared to Canada’s 3. Meanwhile, the host team produced more blocks, holding an 8-6 advantage in the match. Marlon Yant powered through with 25 points off 21 spikes, 3 aces, and a block, while Miguel Ángel López added 22 points to the victory. Stephen Maar led Canada with 20 attack points and 2 blocks.
Cuba’s path to regain Olympic qualification began with the campaign for the continental title itself, driven by the requirement to finish as one of the top four teams outside of the United States. As USA had already been allocated a quota place for LA28 as the host nation, NORCECA structured a dedicated qualification play-off featuring the top four remaining teams from the Continental Championship. Cuba ultimately secured the bronze medal in the Continentals to earn their position in the Olympic Qualification Round, keeping their Olympic dreams firmly alive.
The tournament reached an intense semifinal round on Friday, September 19. Cuba powered past the Dominican Republic with a clean 3-0 sweep (32-30, 25-19, 25-15) to earn their spot in the final. Host nation Canada matched the momentum by defeating Mexico 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-13) in their respective semifinal, setting up the Saturday evening showdown where Cuba ultimately prevailed to claim the Olympic spot.
Cuba’s successful Olympic return highlights one of the key objectives of the FIVB Volleyball Empowerment Projects Platform, which provides national teams with strategic, technical, and financial support across each Olympic cycle.
Through this initiative, FIVB offers assistance for high-level coaching contracts, equipment upgrades, and knowledge transfer programs. As part of this platform, Cuba successfully completed an application-based project to hire performance analyst Rusber Anser Campos for the 2024–2025 cycle. In addition to securing their Olympic berth, Cuba’s fruitful campaign in Moncton also yielded one of the three slots on offer for the 2027 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup to be hosted in Poland.
Hosts Canada, who will join Cuba and USA to compete at the 2027 World Cup, have similarly benefited from a comprehensive FIVB empowerment package. Canada appointed Dave Preston as Next Generation head coach from 2024 to 2026 under a $168,000 coaching project, supported by $75,000 in equipment funding and $12,000 in knowledge transfer support across the 2021 and 2025 seasons. Both programmes underscore how targeted international investment continues to elevate competitive standards across the NORCECA region.
