A year to remember: 2018 men's volleyball in numbers
Aleksandar Atanisjevic in action at the 2018 FIVB World Championship
The 2018 FIVB Volleyball World Championship, the international federation's flagship event, dominated the season with 94 matches played across Italy and Bulgaria - the first time in the history of the competition that it was jointly hosted by two countries.
Poland's Bartosz Kurek gets the ball past USA's Taylor Sander on his way to becoming top scorer at the 2018 FIVB World Championship.
At individual level Poland's Bartosz Kurek, named MVP of the finals, emerged top scorer after bagging a total of 171 points across the month-long event. This, however, was by 100 points short of the all-time record, still held by Puerto Rico's Hector Soto with 271 points from 2006.
Serbia's Aleksandar Atanasijevic, however, tied Soto's all-time record of most points in a single World Championship match. Soto had scored 38 points in Puerto Rico's 3-2 win over Argentina in 2006 and the 27-year-old Serb matched that in the Balkan side's 3-2 win over France in this year's edition.
And while the newly established Volleyball Nations League replaced the old World League and the latter's records were resigned to history, the VNL itself set new points of reference in its inaugural edition.
A total of five players now feature on the list of those who have scored 30 points or more in a single match, topped by China's Jiang Chuan who bagged as many as 37 in his team's five-set win over France in pool play in Lodz.
Overall, it was Brazil's Wallace de Souza who topped the scorers' list with a total of 277 points - four more than Jiang (but in 19 matches for Brazil to 15 for China).
Brazil's Wallace de Souza attacks against France in the VNL Finals in Turin, as he emerges top scorer of the competition's inaugural edition.
The Club World Championship, which completed the FIVB season last month, saw a very balanced distribution of scoring across all teams - so no player managed to make the 'Over 30s' list.
However, there was one match that stood out: Fakel Novy Urengoy v PGE Skra Belchatow, which now holds the records for longest match (2 hours, 40 minutes), longest tie-break (30 minutes) and highest-scoring game (248 points).
