Sokolov discusses an unforgettable match and the perfect team

Tsvetan Sokolov digs the ball in the most unforgettable match of his career – against Brazil in Varna last summer

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 16, 2020 – Here are some of the highlights from Bulgaria and Dynamo Moscow star Tsvetan Sokolov's Facebook Live session last week.

Favourite volleyball skill
“The block. For me, this is the most difficult element and also the most fun. The emotion the block gives me, especially when I see how happy the team is, is really amazing.”

Back-row vs. front-row spiking
“For me it’s easier to spike from the back row because I can see how the blockers are situated and because I have more time and more space. When I was young, my coaches always taught me to spike the difficult balls and that’s why when the ball is far from the net I find it easier to spike.”

How he deals with pressure
“Pressure is part of the game and emotion helps me deal with it. I have the pleasure of playing in really good teams where the objective is only one – to win – and the pressure is always there. But to play against the best players in the world helps you grow.”

Best thing about being a volleyball player
“To be inside the court, be part of a team, and play in front of a lot of fans.”

Most unforgettable match with the national team
“Last year, when we played the Olympic qualification in Varna against Brazil, we were so close to being part of the Olympic Games, but it was not to be. It is really difficult to forget this game. I’m still thinking about it, because it was so painful. Like all athletes, my biggest dream is to win the Olympic title and I hope it happens one day.”

Bulgarian fans
“To play in front of the Bulgarian fans is really emotional. I remember the first time I played in Varna. The feeling was amazing. Playing in front of Bulgarian fans is very different from playing anywhere else.”

Three national teams he likes to play against
“Poland, Italy and Brazil.”

Perfect team
“Setter: Bruno Rezende or Micah Christenson; opposite: Wallace de Souza or Maxim Mikhaylov; outside hitters: Osmany Juantorena, Earvin Ngapeth or Michal Kubiak; middle blockers: Robertlandy Simon and Dmitriy Muserskiy; libero: Jenia Grebennikov.”

Role model in volleyball
“Vladimir Nikolov, because he became a champion with a lot of work - not only the normal practice in the hall. You need to push all the time to become a great player. I had the pleasure to play with him and I can say that he is my idol, because he showed me that I needed to work a lot to become what I am now.”
