Double Argentina glory in CSV Continental Cup

 

Argentina's players celebrated reaching the final stage of the CSV Continental Cup

Asuncion, Paraguay and Mar del Plata, Argentina, February 24, 2019 – Argentina’s women’s and men’s teams booked their place in the CSV Continental Cup Final after they won the second stage of the competition on Saturday. 

Continental Cup matches are played as a best of five rubbers, with countries represented by two teams. The tournament is made up of three phases and the winner of the third phase in June will book a place for their National Olympic Committee at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.


The women’s tournament took place in Asuncion, Paraguay, while the men took to the court in Mar del Plata in Argentina.

Argentine pairs Maria Zonta and Brenda Churin, and Ana Gallay and Fernanda Pereyra reached the final round with a 3-0 victory over Paraguay’s Valiente Michelle and Patricia Carolina, and Erika Sofia and Gabriela Filippo.

In the men’s final Mauro Zelayeta and Bautista Amieva, Nicholas Capogrosso and Julian Azaad took on Colombia’s Johan Murray and Jorge Luis Manjarres, and Juan David Paternina and Jorge Cabrera and won a 3-1.

The first qualifying tournament took place in Chile in January and the host nation’s Esteban and Marco Grimalt, and Gaspar Lammel and Ignacio Zavala qualified on the men’s side, while Colombia’s Diana Rios and Yuli Ayala, and Andrea and Claudia Galindo reached the women’s final. 

Four years ago the Grimalt cousins won the men’s tournament, while Venezuela’s Olaya Perez Pazo and Norisbeth Gonzalez joined them at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games by winning the women’s tournament.
