FIVB coaching support sees Tunisia men’s national team rise through World Rankings

Tunisia team has moved from 28 to 14 in World Rankings since 2019

The FIVB has been providing invaluable coaching support to the Tunisian Volleyball Federation over the past three years, with the aim of elevating the level of volleyball in the country and improving the FIVB Senior World Ranking of the men’s national team.

Since 2019, the FIVB has annually conducted 12-month coaching support programmes in Tunisia with support also approved for 2022. The support has seen the Tunisia men’s national team consistently rise through the World Rankings, moving all the way from rank 28 in 2019 to rank 14 in 2021. In addition, in 2017, the FIVB supported the Tunisian Volleyball Federation with 100 volleyballs as part of its volleyball equipment support.

In the latest support period, the Tunisia men’s national team were assigned expert Italian coach Antonio Giacobbe to lead the project. In 2021, the Tunisia team has continued to go from strength to strength having just won their third straight title at the African Men’s Volleyball Championship 2021 and securing their spot at the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship 2022.

Meanwhile, Antonio Giacobbe has also worked closely with local coaches, particularly those aspiring to coach at an international level, and has actively helped to expand Tunisia’s pool of professional coaches.

FIVB President Dr Ary S. Graça F° said:

“The FIVB continues to elevate the level of volleyball worldwide by improving national teams. The key principle behind achieving this goal is my number one promise to the global Volleyball Family: we reinvest the money that comes from the sport back into the sport.

“It is fantastic to witness the technical improvement of the Tunisia men’s national team. But what is even more incredible is how the team has maintained playing at a high level. This is testament to how the FIVB’s coaching support does not only look to quickly improve a team, it looks to create meaningful changes to the way the game is taught at all levels to ensure a pipeline of new talent in the country.”

Tunisian Volleyball Federation President Firas Elfaleh said:

“On this occasion, I would like to thank FIVB President Dr Ary S. Graça F° for his support, and especially because he believed in us and gave Tunisian volleyball an opportunity to reach its potential.

“The support of the FIVB has helped us to better prepare for the African Men’s Volleyball Championship and other international competitions. This has, in turn, contributed to our excellent results on the field of play.”
