FIVB mourns the passing of Dr. Dirk-Reiner Martens

 

Lausanne, Switzerland, November 13, 2019 - It is with great sadness that the FIVB learned of the passing of Dr. Dirk-Reiner Martens, one of the most influential and well-respected lawyers in the sports movement.

Dr. Martens was a trusted legal advisor and dear friend to the FIVB having a prominent role in assisting the FIVB in a variety of legal matters, including its recent governance reforms.

He was also a pioneer in the Olympic Movement and Dr. Martens’ law firm, Martens Rechtsanwälte, has worked with numerous Olympic and non-Olympic Sports Federations. Dr. Martens was a well-regarded arbitrator at the Court of Arbitration of Sport as well as being significant in the creation of the Basketball Arbitral Tribunal.

FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F° said:

“On behalf of the entire Volleyball Family, I wish to express our deepest sympathies and pass on our condolences to Dr. Martens’ family and loved ones. Our thoughts are with them during this very difficult time.

“Dr. Martens was a fantastic lawyer, advisor and person, not only within volleyball but also to the wider sport community. He always conducted himself with utmost professionalism, and we at the FIVB will miss him dearly.”

The FIVB joins others in the sports community in offering its deepest condolences to Dr. Martens’ wife, Ina Martens, his family and close friends at this time. The FIVB will miss the joy and wisdom that he brought to all of those who had the pleasure of his company.
