Italy mount furious comeback to meet Russia in U21 final

Argentina and Poland to play for bronze

Italy and Russia are the finalists of the FIVB Volleyball U21 Men’s World Championship and are set to play for the title in Sunday’s final in Cagliari. On Saturday the home team came back from two sets down against Poland. Russia faced some tough resistance from Argentina, but won in straight sets. The losers of the two semifinals will battle it out for the bronze.

The other matches on Saturday in Carbonia, Italy and Sofia, Bulgaria determined the remaining match-ups for the final classification fixtures: Bulgaria against Belgium for fifth place, Czechia against Brazil for seventh, Canada against Iran for ninth, Thailand against Cuba for 11th and Bahrain against Egypt for 13th. Morocco and Cameroon will take the 15th and the 16th places, respectively, in the final standings.

Semifinals 1 - 4

Russia and Italy will lock horns for the U21 World Championship gold, after outclassing Argentina and Poland, respectively, in Saturday's spectacular semifinal battles at the Pirastu hall in Cagliari. While the Russian side managed to proceed to the final match after only three sets, this was not the case with Italy, who lost the first two sets to Poland, but came back to win the match in the tie-breaker. Argentina and Poland will play in the bronze medal match.

Playoffs 5 - 8

U21 World Championship co-hosts Bulgaria will play for the fifth place in the final standings of the competition. On Saturday, at the Palazetto Dello Sport hall in the Italian town of Carbonia, they started on the wrong foot against Czechia, losing the first set, but were able to eventually seize the victory. To get the fifth place, the young Bulgarian Lions will have to face the young Red Dragons of Belgium, who later on Saturday outperformed Brazil after a similar scenario, losing the first set, and coming back to win the next three. Czechia and Brazil will meet to determine who will finish seventh.

Playoffs 9 - 12

Canada and Iran will go against each other in Sunday’s ninth place match in Sofia. On Saturday, at the Levski Sofia hall in Bulgaria, Canada shut out their playoff opponents Thailand, Iran defeated Cuba in four sets. The two losing teams will contest the 11th place in the final standings of the tournament.

Playoffs 13 - 16

Bahrain achieved their first on-court victory of the championship on Saturday and will battle against Egypt for the 13th place in Sofia on Sunday. The squad from the Persian Gulf island mastered a clean-slate victory over Morocco at the Levski Sofia volleyball hall in the Bulgarian capital. The Moroccans will finish the U21 World Championship in the 15th place, above Cameroon, who withdrew before the start of the tournament.
