Poland and Czechia claim historic U20 European titles in snow volleyball

Bakuriani in Georgia hosted the inaugural event

• Poland, Czechia and Türkiye win the men’s medals

• Czechia, Poland and Türkiye claimed the women’s medals


The women’s national team of Czechia and the men’s national team of Poland triumphed as the first-ever U20 European champions in snow volleyball. The historic CEV U20 Snow Volleyball European Championships were held last week in Bakuriani, Georgia.

Nine men’s and 10 women’s teams from nine European countries took part in the championships and all podium places were claimed by representatives of Poland, Czechia and Türkiye.

Poland dominated the men’s tournament. Artem Besarab, Jakub Krzeminski, Szymon Beta and Szymon Pietraszek cruised through the competition undefeated, losing only a set in six matches played. After topping the Pool A standings, they went on to produce a 2-0 (15-13, 15-11) semifinal win over Pool B runners-up Bulgaria. In the gold medal match, the team from Poland mastered a convincing 2-0 (15-10, 15-6) victory over Czechia to claim the inaugural title.

Czechia also won all of their matches on the way to the final, crowning their quest with a 2-0 (15-11, 15-9) sweep of their semifinal against Türkiye 1. In the bronze medal match, Türkiye 1 overcame Bulgaria’s resistance to get on the podium after a hard-fought 2-0 (15-13, 22-20) win.

Italy, Türkiye 2, Moldova, Georgia 2 and Georgia 1, in that order, followed in the places from fifth to ninth in the final standings.

The teams of Poland and Czechia met in the women’s final too. This time, Czechia prevailed in a 2-1 (10-15, 15-13, 15-7) comeback, with Anna Pavelkova, Katerina Pavelkova and Tereza Novotna making history as the first-ever junior continental champions in snow volleyball.

The duo from Czechia lost only a set in their four Pool A matches, but then had to battle through two tie-breakers on the way to the top. In their semifinal match, they delivered a 2-1 (15-4, 13-15, 15-8) victory over Türkiye 2. In the other semifinal, Poland mastered a 2-0 (15-6, 15-13) win over Italy. Türkiye 2 grabbed the bronze after a tight 2-1 (7-15, 15-12, 18-16) comeback victory over Italy.

The places from fifth to 10th were occupied by Türkiye 1, Armenia, Romania, Bulgaria, Georgia 1 and Georgia 2 in that order.
