President Graça praises role of technical innovation in refereeing as FIVB Commissions begin
FIVB President Graça chairs a meeting of the Rules of the Game and Refereeing Commission on Thursday.
In his opening address, President Graça made it clear to all in attendance that the quality of refereeing is a key priority for the FIVB, as they continue looking for ways to improve the sport for both athletes and spectators, and ensure that the sport is as fair and transparent as possible.
“We are constantly monitoring methods of keeping up with the most innovative and advanced technology available to sports. We introduced the Challenge System and we have seen great success over the last two years. Improving accuracy, for the benefit of officials, players and fans is incredibly important.”
The Challenge System was first implemented at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, and the FIVB has found great success. During the 2017 FIVB World League, 701 challenges were requested, and 285 were successful (43%). At the 2017 FIVB World Grand Prix, 262 of 598 challenges were successfully overturned (42%).
Beach volleyball also reported a 32.8% success rate for the 2016-2017 World Tour, while at the 2017 Beach Volleyball World Championships in Vienna, 23 of 83 challenges were successful (27.7%).
As well as the Challenge System, the FIVB has also brought in Referee Preparation Seminars, which will help officials to deal with high-pressure scenarios during major FIVB events.
In total, 14 members of The Rules of the Game and Refereeing Commission gathered with President Graça, to discuss the current systems and processes in place, and to suggest new and effective methods of ensuring accurate officiating.
The FIVB Commission meetings begin today, and will conclude on January 31, 2018. As well as the Rules of the Game and Refereeing Commission, there are also meetings scheduled to discuss all areas of volleyball, including legal, communications and development.
