Three U21 semifinalists emerge

Russia, Poland and Italy to fight for world championship medals

Russia, Poland and Italy reserved three of the spots in the semifinals of FIVB Volleyball U21 Men’s World Championship 2001, after recording their second round-two victories in Sofia and Cagliari on Tuesday. The last vacancy will be contested in a direct duel between Argentina and Czechia on Wednesday.

Pool E

Italy secured their spot in the semis after shutting out Czechia at home in Cagliari’s Pirastu hall to maintain an impeccable record in the pool. Argentina took a sweet revenge from Belgium, outclassing them in four sets to set up a face-to-face encounter with the Czechs for the other available berth among the last four of the tournament.

Pool F

Russia started the day at the Levski Sofia hall in Bulgaria with a precious shutout of Brazil to become the first team with a safe berth in the semifinals. In the other Pool F game later on Tuesday, Poland joined them after mastering a fantastic comeback from two sets down to edge hosts Bulgaria in the tie-breaker. On Wednesday, Russia and Poland will lock horns for the first place in Pool F before Bulgaria and Brazil battle it out for the third.

Pool G

Thailand and defending champions Iran defeated Egypt (by 3-1) and Morocco (by 3-0), respectively, at the Palazetto Dello Sport hall in Carbonia, Italy on Tuesday to move up to this weekend’s playoffs in the battle for the ninth place. Before that, on Wednesday, they will have to go against each other in an all-Asian clash for the top of the Pool G standings, while their North African rivals lock horns for the third place.

Pool H

Cuba progressed to the semifinals of the ninth-place foursome after defeating Bahrain in four sets in Tuesday’s only Pool H match at Levski Sofia volleyball hall. That result also stamped Canada’s ticket for advancement, while winless Bahrain will have to join the race for the 13th place in the final standings. Wednesday’s encounter between Cuba and Canada will determine the pool winner.
