Volleyball Empowerment helps Chile ring beach volleyball gold in Gstaad

The Chile team has been benefitting from both coaching support and volleyball equipment under Volleyball Empowerment

Chile’s star men’s beach volleyball team of Esteban Grimalt and cousin Marco Grimalt rang the cow bells at the Volleyball World Elite 16 Beach Pro Tour Event in Gstaad, Switzerland this past weekend.

The current Pan American Games champions reversed their Pool D loss to Czech Republic’s David Schweiner and Ondrej Perusic to win gold in straight sets 2:0 (21-19, 22-20) on Sunday.  Seeded 13 for the event, the win marks the Chilean duo’s best ever performance in Gstaad after eight editions, surpassing their previous best result of 17th place in 2019.

For the dual Olympians (Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020), their success in Gstaad is the current highlight of the team’s most successful season so far in their partnership since 2011. This past weekend’s victory marks the pair’s fourth career gold medal.

The FIVB’s Volleyball Empowerment programme has supported the Chilean Volleyball Federation since 2019. The FIVB also recently increased its investment in beach volleyball in Chile, specifically coaching support and volleyball equipment - beach volleyballs and nets after Tokyo 2020 - which has all contributed towards the team’s recent success.

FIVB President Dr Ary S. Graça F° said:

“Topping the podium at Gstaad is an incredible result for the Chilean men’s national beach volleyball team. The FIVB always encouraged Chile to concentrate on beach volleyball and the President of the Chilean Volleyball Federation, Jorge Pino Madrid, has accepted this advice and worked hard on the project, so we must also congratulate him on this important achievement. Their success will no doubt inspire children in the country to play beach volleyball as they have strong role models to aspire to in Esteban and Marco Grimalt.”

“As always, we are committed to reinvesting the money that comes from the sport back into the sport through our revolutionary programme of Volleyball Empowerment. Time and time again, the FIVB’s support has helped teams realise their full potential, and Chilean beach volleyball is the latest example of this.”

“As a National Federation and as volleyball enthusiasts, we are very proud of what our beach volleyball duo of Esteban and Marco Grimalt have achieved. They have truly dedicated themselves to beach volleyball, and they will serve as role models for new generations of beach volleyball players.

“The FIVB President advised us to concentrate our efforts on beach volleyball and we followed his advice and worked hard to achieve the results we see today. We would like to thank the FIVB for its support through Volleyball Empowerment, which has given us access best in class coaches to accelerate our efforts.
