Taubate Funvic ended the preliminary round of the 2020 edition of the tournament with a perfect record and a 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-21) win over Volei Renata Campinas at the Abaete Arena in Taubate.

The team coached by former Argentinean player Javier Weber has now won all of its four matches without dropping any sets along the way. Taubate, who ended Campinas’ undefeated streak in the tournament, clinched the top spot in the preliminary round heading into the semifinals.

Brazil national team star middle blocker Lucas Saatkamp was Taubate’s key player in the victory against Campinas. The 34-year-old veteran, who wears a protective mask during matches, was nearly perfect when spiking and also secured several points when serving and blocking. Fellow Rio 2016 Olympic champions Mauricio Borges, Douglas Souza and Mauricio Souza also had impressive performances in the team’s triumph.

“We played a very good match,” Weber said. “We’ve been very effective when siding out and the players are also very dedicated in blocking and defence. We need to keep the rhythm going into the semifinals.”

Taubate will open their semifinal series on Tuesday against fourth-placed Vedacit Guarulhos. On Wednesday, Campinas, who finished second, will clash with third-placed Volei Um Itapetininga.
