Tunisia crowned African champions and secure LA28 Olympic berth

Tunisia were crowned continental champions on Friday after defeating Cameroon 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-19) in the final of the 2026 CAVB Men’s African Nations Championship at El Menzah Hall in Tunis.

The hosts celebrated the title in front of their home supporters and, with it, secured a direct quota place for Africa at the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028.

LA28 will mark Tunisia’s eighth appearance at the Olympic Games. Their best finish came when Los Angeles last hosted the Games in 1984, when they placed ninth.

Tunisia held a narrow advantage at the net in the final, recording nine blocks to Cameroon’s eight, while also serving eight aces to their opponents’ seven. The bigger difference came in attack, where the hosts outscored Cameroon 33-23.

Outside hitter Oussama Ben Romdhane led the way with a match-high 19 points, scoring 12 in attack and adding four aces and three blocks. Opposite Ali Bongui contributed another 11 points as Tunisia secured the continental title in straight sets.

The victory completed an unbeaten campaign for Tunisia, who had set the pace from the group phase. The hosts went through pool play without defeat to finish top of Pool A and earn direct passage to the quarterfinals.

They continued their run by defeating Rwanda in the quarterfinals before overcoming Morocco 3-1 in the semi-finals to book their place in the championship match. Victory over Cameroon then completed their unbeaten tournament on home soil.

Tunisia’s continental success also follows continued investment in the national team programme through FIVB Volleyball Empowerment.

The Tunisian Volleyball Federation has received USD 330,000 in coach support through Volleyball Empowerment, the largest coaching support allocation in the region. The investment has supported the appointment of head coach Camilo Placi through the current season as Tunisia continued to strengthen their national team programme.

That support followed an earlier equipment grant of USD 81,000 provided between 2017 and 2018, further contributing to the development of the federation’s high-performance programme.

Beyond the Olympic berth, the 2026 CAVB Men’s African Nations Championship also served as the African qualifier for the 2027 World Cup, with the top three finishers securing places at the global event.

Champions Tunisia and runners-up Cameroon took the first two berths, while Algeria completed the African qualifying trio after defeating Morocco 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-18) in the bronze medal match.
