The 2026 NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship is set to deliver high-octane international volleyball action at the Avenir Centre in Moncton, New Brunswick, from September 11-19.
Host nation Canada will welcome a stacked field featuring USA, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Guatemala and Surinam for a high-stakes week of competition.
The championship is part of the qualification pathway for the LA28 Olympic Games and the 2027 FIVB Volleyball World Cup.
The United States has already been allocated a quota place for LA28 as the host nation and will participate in both NORCECA Championships to their conclusion.
Following each championship, the four highest-finishing teams excluding the USA will advance to a separate semi-final and final phase, with the winner securing the NORCECA qualification place for LA28.
This event also highlights significant regional structural growth boosted by targeted investments from the FIVB Volleyball Empowerment Projects Platform.
Five of the eight participating federations in Moncton have received strategic support to elevate their national programmes through high-level coaching contracts, equipment grants, performance resources and knowledge transfer modules.
Leading these development initiatives is Mexico, which received the largest overall package worth $517,000 to secure head coach Carlos Schwanke from 2022 to 2026, alongside $138,000 in equipment support through 2025.
Host nation Canada have expanded their national pipeline by appointing Dave Preston as Next Generation head coach from 2024 to 2026 under a $168,000 coaching project, further enhanced by $75,000 in equipment and $12,000 in knowledge transfer support across the 2021 and 2025 seasons.
Surinam have benefited from a $136,500 coaching project to retain head coach Carlos Orta Fellove through 2026.
The Dominican Republic secured a $100,500 coaching investment for head coach Jose Alexander Gutierrez Sanchez through 2026, adding to prior grants of $78,000 in equipment and $6,000 in knowledge transfer received in 2025.
Meanwhile, Cuba successfully completed an application-based project to hire performance analyst Rusber Anser Campos for the 2024-2025 cycle.
On the court, the historical pedigree on display at the Avenir Centre reflects decades of fierce regional rivalry, led by the continent’s most decorated powerhouse teams.
USA enter the field not only as the reigning champions following their gold-medal performance in 2023, but also as ten-time winners of the event, seeking to further solidify their modern dominance.
They face perpetual friction from Cuba, the undisputed historical ruler of NORCECA men’s volleyball, who boast a staggering 16 continental titles and possess a legacy defined by explosive athleticism and relentless pressure.
Meanwhile, host nation Canada command their own elite status. Having captured a memorable gold on home soil in the 2015 edition, the Canadians carry the championship experience and tactical depth needed to challenge the historic duo.
With 27 of the 28 all-time continental crowns split amongst these three standard-bearers – who also enjoy a distinct competitive edge as core, mainstay teams on the annual VNL circuit – the battle for supremacy will be intense.
While traditional heavyweights often dominate the headlines, the gap across the region continues to narrow as Puerto Rico (2021 NORCECA champions), Mexico, Dominican Republic, Guatemala and Surinam are set to arrive with legitimate ambitions to disrupt the status quo.
These programmes will compete in New Brunswick with a healthy dose of optimism, eager to test the power structure, creating a deeply competitive atmosphere that showcases the very best of continental volleyball along the road to LA28.
