Brazil women put three-decade South American reign on the line at Maracanãzinho

The iconic Maracanãzinho in Rio de Janeiro will host the 2026 CSV Women’s South American Volleyball Championship from September 8 to 13.

The prestigious event brings together six of the continent’s premier volleyball nations: host country Brazil, alongside Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Peru and Venezuela.

The stakes for this continental gathering could not be higher, offering a direct gateway to the pinnacle of international competition.

Most notably, the championship marks the initial step on the qualification pathway for the LA28 Olympic Games, awarding a direct quota berth to the eventual winners. Additionally, the top three finishing teams will secure coveted CSV entries into the 2027 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Cup, guaranteeing that every match carries immense tactical significance.

The overall standard of competition across the region has received a substantial boost from targeted development initiatives. Five of the six participating nations have benefited from comprehensive investment projects under the FIVB Volleyball Empowerment programme.

This structural support encompasses major programme upgrades, including elite coaching, essential equipment resources, and strategic knowledge transfer initiatives designed to elevate the competitive baseline of South American volleyball.

Among these beneficiaries, Argentina have secured the highest allocation of targeted support, receiving $342,000 to assist with appointing a senior national team head coach through the current season, adding to an $18,000 knowledge transfer package awarded in 2022.

Colombia’s ongoing $210,000 coaching project funded the appointment of head coach Guillherme Schmitz for the 2025–2026 period, building upon $92,500 in equipment resources and $6,000 in knowledge transfer granted between 2018 and 2024.

Similarly, Peru received $210,000 to support head coach Antonio Rizola Neto across the 2025 and 2026 seasons.

Chile have directed its investment heavily into youth development, utilising three ongoing projects valued at $210,000 to appoint coaches Raul Pereyra Pereyra, Mauricio Montero Sepulveda, and Claudia Sepulveda Ortiz to lead their women’s U20 and girls’ U18 programmes.

This builds on a prior $298,500 investment used to fund critical equipment upgrades from 2019 through 2025.

Meanwhile, host nation Brazil, set to receive $21,000 in application-based support alongside $6,000 in equipment assistance, enter as the indisputable favourite.

Bolstered by home-court advantage inside the storied walls of the Maracanãzinho, the Brazilian team carry a formidable legacy, having remained undefeated continental champions since 1995.

Armed with high-level international experience and unmistakable squad depth, the hosts look to maintain their multi-decade reign at the summit of South American volleyball.

While Brazil remain the standard-bearer, several rivals are primed to mount a serious challenge. Argentina and Colombia stand as the primary contenders capable of disrupting the established order, both having shown steady tactical growth in recent international cycles.

Meanwhile, traditional powerhouse Peru, alongside rising squads from Chile and Venezuela, will aggressively target top three finishes to lock in their places for the 2027 World Cup.
